Privacy shouldn't depend on your senses.
Sighted people read their messages silently. Blind and deafblind people deserve the same: to read a bank code, a medical result or a private message without anyone else knowing what it says.
-
Cost shouldn't decide who gets to read.
Almost everyone already has a smartphone, and every smartphone already has a vibration motor. Software costs nothing extra to deliver. A reading tool that requires a device worth thousands of dollars leaves most people out.
-
Independence is built from small daily things.
Reading your own messages, understanding a stranger at a counter, checking when the bus arrives. Each one done without help adds up to a more independent life.
-
Nobody should be left out of a conversation.
Deafblind people are often cut off from the people around them simply because there's no shared channel. A phone that turns speech into touch opens one.
-
It's a skill worth teaching.
Only about 1 in 10 blind and deafblind people can read vibration patterns today. That isn't because the others can't learn. It's because nobody has made it easy to. We want learning to take minutes a day, on a device people already own.
Why we're doing this
Because reading your own messages, privately and independently, shouldn't depend on your senses or your bank balance.
